Luftbild Reußenköge, Bredstedter Koog im Kreis Nordfriesland | Das Deich-Vorland entstand durch natürliche Sedimentationsprozesse: Bei Flut transportiert das Meer feine Schwebstoffe wie Schlick und Sedimente in flache Küstenbereiche. In ruhigen Wasserzonen, besonders hinter Inseln oder in Buchten, setzen sich diese Teilchen ab. Pionierpflanzen wie Queller und Schlickgräser siedeln sich an, verankern das Material und fördern weitere Ablagerungen. So wächst das Vorland über Jahre langsam aus dem Watt heraus und wird schrittweise „deichreif“. Dieser natürliche Aufbau dient als Puffer gegen Wellen und ist Voraussetzung für stabile Deiche.
